Mid-Atlantic Microbiome Meet-up and Bioinformatics Workshop

December 14, 2018

Taxonomic Identification Workshop

Interested in learning more about how to classify your microbial reads? Join us for the Mid-Atlantic Microbiome Meet-up (M3) Bioinformatics Workshop.
When: January 10, 2019 from 9 am- 4 pm
Where: Johns Hopkins University, Homewood Campus, Baltimore, Maryland
Registration: $40, registration will close December 30th, 2018
Seats available: 30
Description: Rapid advances in next generation sequencing technologies have helped advance our understanding of the microbiome and its impact on human and ecological health. One of the first and most frequently performed steps in microbial sequencing analysis is taxonomic identification. At this full day workshop, we will cover the basic theory behind different taxonomic annotation approaches, including database searches, discriminant k-mer methods, machine learning techniques, and phylogenetic approaches. Attendees will get to work with the developers of several current taxonomic tools and gain hands-on experience applying those tools to both 16S rDNA sequencing and shotgun metagenomic sequencing datasets. A particular focus will be placed on critically evaluating and comparing the taxonomic identification and abundance profiles output by different software. Participants should be comfortable working on the command line. Limited financial support is available for graduate students, including for travel and accommodation for students traveling from outside the Baltimore region.
